IN THE MOMENT WITH STEPHANIE BROEK
Amsterdam-based content creator @stephaniebroek takes us to her favourite local gems on a spring Saturday in the city.
”THIS WEEKLY ORGANIC
FARMER’S MARKET IS A
FAVOURITE AMONG LOCALS.”
This weekly organic farmer’s market is a favourite among locals. I get up extra early to arrive when it’s still quiet – have to bike to the other side of the city, but it’s worth it. The intimate market is on a small square in front of the Noorderkerk built in 1600. It’s beautiful throughout the year, but my favourite time to visit is spring. I feel so grateful when I leave with my basket full of seasonal, local fruit and veggies.
TROPPO GIOVANE WINES
My next stop is the Troppo Giovane wine shop, and there are two reasons why I love it. First of all for its incredible interior – red walls, blue ceilings and floors, and a beautiful oval natural stone table in the centre. I wouldn’t be surprised if it appeared in a Wes Anderson film. The second reason is that they sell the best natural wines in the city (I’m a sucker for natural wines, preferably red or orange). The bottles at Troppo are all so chic, I often choose one based on the most aesthetically-pleasing label.
”THE STORE HAS A BEAUTIFUL
WABI-SABI INTERIOR, AND IF YOU
WALK IN ON QUIET MOMENTS
AMANDA WILL MAKE YOU
A CUP OF TEA TO TRY ...”
FORMOCHA PREMIUM TEA
Just a block away is Formocha, where you’ll find a selection of Chinese, Taiwanese and Japanese loose leaf teas of the highest quality. Owner Amanda Yiu learned about tea in her hometown Gong Fu Cha where the tea ceremony was perfected over hundreds of years. The store has a beautiful wabi-sabi interior, and if you walk in on quiet moments Amanda will make you a cup of tea to try her newest additions to the assortment. In between helping customers she’s always baking and she may even serve you a sesame cookie, a donut or moon cake.
Nothing says spring like fresh flowers. I particularly love this stand at the Van Baerlestraat because it always has unexpected flowers. It’s the season of magnolias and since I don’t have a yard, I love to mimic a garden feeling in my apartment by getting a beautiful magnolia branch. I’ve been appreciating small things, like seeing flowers in bloom, even more than usual in lockdown.
”I OFTEN VISIT STUDIO3000 TO SEE
THE NEW ARRIVALS, AND I ALWAYS
LEAVE INSPIRED WHEN I VISIT.”
I often visit Studio3000 to see the new arrivals, and I always leave inspired when I visit. It’s a vintage furniture store selling sought after designs such as a Saarinen Tulip chair and Frank Gehry’s Wiggle side chair. You’ll also find equally beautiful unbranded pieces, like marble bookends and large vases.
EVENING AT HOME
With lockdown measures easing, I’ve invited two friends for a dinner at home. After arranging the flowers, I’m going to prepare the vegetables I bought at the market today. I’m going to make a pasta with pesto made from avocado, basil and pine nuts. To transform my look from day to night, I’m switching the Frida Laced Shoe for the Camille Knee High Boot.
