THE WASH HOUSE
JENNY ANDERSSON
ULLKONTORET, GOTLAND, SWEDEN
Jenny Andersson and Hans Bulthuis moved to Gotland in 2010, and discovered that a large amount of Swedish wool was not taken care of after being cut. They researched how to solve the problem and decided to open Ullkontoret In 2016. At the wash house, The raw Swedish wool is washed in large bins, dried, and pressed into bales that can be sent to the yarn mill.

“The raw wool is the most fascinating part of the washing process. There you really see what the fibres look like, how curly they are, how long they are, how some fleeces have a combination of long straight hairs and short, soft fibres with a fine crimp. of course, after a long warm day in the scouring mill, a big heap of clean wool is also quite satisfying to look at!”

“Filippa K made their first trial batch with us in 2018. By then we had been scouring Swedish wool for two years. Before we installed and got started with scouring wool on Gotland in 2016, there was no possibility to scour local wool within the country.”
