A Mindful Holiday:
Packing Lists & Travel Secrets
Time to reflect, to love, to experience, to be in motion or in stillness, reducing
life to its simplest, richest things. That’s what A Mindful Holiday is all about,
whether it’s going on a faraway adventure or drifting away inside a book at the dock.
For our summer edition, we’ve asked always inspiring Dorothea Barth-
, Shini Park and Emma Elwin about their perfect packing lists,
favourite destinations and the secrets to travelling light.
Dorothea Barth-Jörgensen
Model, photographer and artist Dorothea Barth-Jörgensen is based
in Los Angeles. She’s featured in our Summer 2017 campaign, and you can also
read her poetic words in biannual fashion and culture magazine SS/AW.
The Beach Kaftan is made from 100% modal, where the supplier has been part of The STWI Project for water, energy and chemical savings. The Rae Wide Pants is made from non-wrinkle tri-acetate, produced in a closed loop system run by renewable energy.
“Bring multifunctional essentials, for example a kaftan that can double as both scarf and head piece.”
Always on my packing list: Palo Santo sticks, a note book and my black tourmaline stone for protection.

This summer I’ll read: Susan Sontag’s On Photography.

In my hand luggage: Water, camera and my tourmaline stone.

The key to travel light: Bring essentials that can be multifunctional so you can be creative and use them in different ways, for example a kaftan that can be used both as a scarf and a head piece.

This makes my flight mode a happy one: Comfortable clothes, a good book, a flat white if possible or a cappuccino.

Between vacation, my great everyday escape is: Malibu Beach, Los Angeles.

My summer playlist:
  • Pional – A New Dawn
  • Claire Denamur – Rien de Moi
  • Frazey Ford – Done
  • Jai Ma – Way!
  • J.J. Cale – Travelin’ Light

My dream destination: Tibet or New Zeeland, both seems magic and grand.

Best places on earth: Nosara in Costa Rica, New Mexico and Tromsö in northern Norway.
Shini Park
Digital consultant, graphic designer and photographer Shini Park is based in London.
She is the founder of Cube Collective and writer of lifestyle blog Park & Cube.
Her book Adorn: 25 DIY Stylish Fashion Projects was released in 2014.
The Shiny Swimsuit has a classic silhouette made from a quick drying fabric.
The fully lined Mae Slip Dress is made from 100% silk with adjustable straps.
“ The foremost thing that a lot of people overlook, is a great carry-on bag. ”
My summer playlist:
  • Nicki Minaj – Truffle Butter
  • Frank Ocean – White Ferrari
  • Kelis – Trick Me
  • FeminiNITTY – Nitty Scott
  • The Notorious BIG – Hyptnotize

My dream destination: Pamukkale Thermal Pools in Turkey, there is a region in South Western Turkey where aquamarine hot springs cascade in multiple levels, and from far away it looks like an ice-cream cake with blue icing.

Best places on earth: Rome, Seoul and the Scottish Highlands.

I never travel without my: A simple bathing suit (usually a one-piece) in case there’s water nearby, and a HDMI cable to hook up my laptop to the hotel’s TV. Some people bring a familiar candle from home, I bring Netflix.

The first thing I do upon arrival: I like to use scented beauty products to help remember an experience better, so the minute I arrive I start using it more heavily. Sometimes I spritz the inside of my luggage on arrival. For example, the smell of banana sunscreen reminds me of my time in New York in the summer of 2014 and whenever I smell a Shisheido night cream, I’m reminded of my honeymoon in Greece.

My perfect packing list: A neutral dress that can be worn up or down, a light jacket or knit as cover up, a pair of espadrilles, wireless speakers, a silk neckerchief, and a trusty pair of sunglasses.

This summer I’ll read: I’ve had Blink by Malcolm Gladwell on my reading list for a long time, but I have a feeling I’ll be binge-reading Karin Slaughter books when I’m lazing on a sun lounger.

In my hand luggage: My First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Concentrate, I suffer from eczema, and so far, I’ve found that it’s the only thing that keeps my skin from becoming bone-dry during a flight.

The key to travel light: The first and foremost thing that a lot of people overlook, is a great carry-on bag. I personally think that ’lightness’ comes not just in the weight or size, but the fact that your hands are free and that your essentials are easy to reach. Opt for a 4-wheel carry-on luggage, and a roomy bag for your in-flight bits. Plan your outfits before packing, only pack what you will wear, and roll your clothes.

This make my flight mode a happy one: Playing the Hans Zimmer The Dark Knight or Inception score music as the flight takes off – an epic journey needs an epic soundtrack.
Emma Elwin
Stylist and photographer Emma Elwin is based in Stockholm. She is the co-founder and fashion director of
Make It Last, a digital platform and creative agency with a sustainable and diverse take on fashion and life.
The Silk Neckerchief in Chiffon is made from 100% silk, with a digitally produced print which reduces the use of water and energy than traditional printing or dyeing. The 100% Linen T-shirt is a more sustainable fabric since it needs less water and fertilisers to grow.
My perfect packing list: T-shirts, pale blue jeans, a crispy white shirt, wet suit, sandals and sunscreen.

This summer I’ll read: In the Darkroom by Susan Faludi.

In my hand luggage: My film camera.

The key to travel light: Make sure all the garments that you bring match each other and can be worn in many ways.

I never travel without: The audio books of Harry Potter narrated by Stephen Fry (on my phone).

Between vacation, my great everyday escape is: A walk around the lake next to our house.

My summer playlist:
  • Shannon and the Clams – Rip Van Winkle
  • Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong – Cheek to Cheek
  • Black Lips – Veni Vidi Vici
  • Billie Holiday – Easy Living
  • The Strange Boys – This Girl Taught Me a Dance

Best places on earth: Home with my family, Galicia in Northern Spain and Encinitas in California.

The first thing I do upon arrival: Unpack everything in its right place. Unless the surf is good, then I’ll go surfing.
