Ahlala, Paris!

Paris…Paris….now back to fetch my daughter and help her home with all her stuff she’s accumulated during the year she’s been studying in Paris. My mother met up with us from Nice, so we spent a couple of days together in the city, three generations of women, just hanging out…nice.

Didn’t feel like shopping (believe it or not), felt more like lunching at my favourite La Palette, walking, enjoying the elegance of the city and checking out this eccentric store full of stuffed animals. The store is called Deyrolle, it’s on 46 Rue du Bac and it was first opened in 1831 for taxidermi passionistas – it’s one of those specialist stores that are so typical of Paris and it’s like walking into another world…room after room of amazing creatures from giraffes, lions, polar bears to insects and extroardinary birds. It’s like a museum where everything’s for sale.

Monumenta

This is the best cultural thrill I’ve had in a long long time. Absolutely fantastic! Anish Kapoor, the international indian sculptor has created a monumental piece of art that is presented in the Grand Palais in Paris, as part of its Monumenta 2011 exhibition. It is an enormous rubber sculpture, I think it looks like 3 giant aubergines fused together(!) and it’s sheer size, sensual shape and beautiful deep purple colour just transfixes you. The fact that it is placed within such a historic elegant building of light and glass as the Grand Palais makes the whole experience even more fascinating.

You can even go inside the sculpture! The atmosphere inside is like the stomach of a whale or a galactic spaceship. The red light is the natural sunlight passing through the glassroof of the Grand Palais and penetrating the purple rubber of the sculpture….incredible.

Place Dauphine, Yves and Edith

Place Dauphine is one of my favourite squares in Paris. Right smack in the centre, on the Ile de la Cité it’s just round the corner from Pont Neuf where absolutely all the tourists cross the Seine and yet very few people know about the charm of this place. Yves Montand used to live here…I love his charisma when he was young. He started out as a truck driver and was discovered by Edith Piaff …the rest is history, as they say.

I have this picture of Yves and Edith in my study at home – somehow it inspires me, a sense of passion and freedom.

Rose bakery in Paris is a tiny little Anglo-French bakery in Paris that serves the most amazing green tea sponge cake that you simply can’t miss, should you be in the neighbourhood. Since the bakery’s popularity has grown rapidly in the last couple of years they now have two bakerys in town, both equally good.

OFR is the bookstore that holds three Paris location to its name and stocks those rare editions and tittles you never can seem to find anywhere else. Specialising in photography, graphic design and fashion be sure to drop by and have a look or just to say hi to the friendly staff if you have the opertunity, the store on Rue Dupetit Thouares also hosts an excellent gallery at the back.
